Our second component is a site-specific restoration plan for the Eastern Expansion Area of the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area (DTRNA). This plan is meant to act as a case study for strategic habitat restoration where goals, management actions and anticipated outcomes directly benefit the desert tortoise. The restoration plan includes features such as an implementation schedule, an estimated budget, success criteria, potential local and regional partners and future research topics.

This tool is intended to aid managers in assessing a site's potential to be desert tortoise habitat within the boundaries of the Western Mojave Desert. Land managers are encouraged to apply this assessment to evaluate the present condition of habitat or potential habitat. The site assessment tool is based on physical and biological features as well as threats and the history of disturbance. With this tool, land managers will be able to assess the condition of important habitat features, helping them to prioritize restoration actions needed to restore habitat.
